Saab needed to test the chassis of the forthcoming model, to be called the Saab 99, and the testing needed to be performed on real roads. Saab's solution was to construct a special 96 body that was widened by 20cm - thereby giving the appearance of a 96 and preserving the secrecy of the forthcoming model. As many as Six Toads were built, but being prototypes there are no model year changes.
